What maintenance is required for landscape lighting systems?

Periodic professional maintenance is essential to keeping your outdoor lighting working safely and effectively. At Creative Nightscapes, we offer landscape lighting repair and maintenance. While it is no substitute for professional maintenance, there are several steps you can take to help maintain your outdoor lighting.

Caution: Electrical wiring should not be handled by people without the proper training, as there is a high risk of electrocution. If you see wiring that has been damaged, shut off the lights and contact an outdoor lighting professional ASAP.

Check for Exposed or Damaged Wiring
Make a habit of regularly inspecting your outdoor lighting’s wiring. Damaged wires are a potentially lethal hazard to people and animals. If you detect signs of damage, such as damage to the protective covering or frayed wires, it is important to contact a landscape lighting professional. If you see exposed wires, they will need to be inspected and reburied.

Clean Fixtures if You Know How
Over time, outdoor lights get dirty, reducing their ability to illuminate your property, putting them at greater risk for corrosion, and possibly causing other problems.

If you feel comfortable doing so, you can periodically clean your landscape light fixtures.

Step 1. Shut off the power at the breaker to the light
Step 2. Use a soft, dry cloth to wipe dirt, grime, and debris from lenses and fixtures.
Step 3. If the fixtures are exceptionally dirty, clean them using a sponge or cloth that is dampened with water and mild soap, such as dish detergent. Be sure not to use harsh chemicals like ammonia, which can damage metal. Caution: Ensure the fixtures have dried completely before power is returned to them. This helps protect against shock and socket water damage.
Step 4. Turn the power back on for the fixtures and check to see if they work correctly.

Redjust Fixtures that Have Been Moved

Light fixtures may be moved out of position for several reasons, such as being bumped into. If that’s the case, you’ll want to readjust the fixture so they can do their job.

Look for Signs of Fixture Damage
Outdoor lighting fixtures that have corrosion, dents, cracks, or other damage may need to be replaced. A damaged fixture may no longer be water resistant, increasing the risk of electric shock. If fixtures have cracked or broken pieces, they may cut animals or people.

Check that Bulbs Shine Correctly
While LED bulbs are long-lasting, they do burn out or can encounter problems. It’s a good idea to have light bulbs replaced before they completely burn out. If you don’t know how to change outdoor light bulbs safely, please contact an outdoor lighting professional, as doing so can be dangerous.

How long do LED landscape lights last?

LED landscape lighting can last as much as 25,000 to 50,000 hours, or five years of constant use, and as much as 15 years with intermittent use.

Is landscape lighting safe for pets and wildlife?

Landscape lighting presents several risks for pets and wildlife. However, there are steps you can take to mitigate these risks.

Wires
Animals may chew exposed outdoor light wires, potentially resulting in fatal shocks, which highlights the importance of keeping them safely buried. Regular inspection of outdoor lighting, including wires, is an important part of keeping animals safe.

LED Lights
Pets or animals that come into contact with hot bulbs can get burned. LED lights are much cooler than conventional lights.

Lighting
Outdoor lighting can threaten wild animals in several ways. Birds can be attracted to the lights, causing them to collide with the lights. An animal’s circadian rhythm can be disrupted by light.

There are several actions you can take to help protect wildlife from the effects of light pollution.

Motion sensors: With motion sensors, landscape lights don’t stay on all the time but only when they are needed. This is a great option for flood lighting or lights atop poles.
Low light placement: Installing outdoor lights low to the ground helps reduce light pollution. By keeping lights at or lower than 15’, you’ll help only illuminate necessary areas.
Use Directional LEDS: By using task-specific lighting, you can help cut back on unnecessary lighting.
Utilize red or amber lights: Some long-wavelength light colors, such as red and purple lights, won’t be noticed by most animals.
